The Academy Awards Show
Wednesday January 31st 2007, 10:54 am

I haven’t missed watching an Academy Awards show on television since I was very young. My earliest memory was in the early 1960’s when I was 12 or 13 years old, which may have the first year it was broadcast in Canada. In those days we had only two television stations, the CBC and CTV, and we had never seen anything like it on television before. It was a big event for my brother and I to stay up very late to watch it until it was over, even though we could barely stay awake, and probably had to get up for school the next day.

These days the event isn’t as special as it once was. There are so many awards shows on television, and the Golden Globes is a better show to watch. The Academy Awards is still the most elaborate and the largest award show and I would never miss watching it.

There is a little over three weeks remaining before this year’s 79th ceremony on February 25. I have already seen some of the nominated movies, but I would like to see a few more. The nominated movies which I have already seen are The Departed, Little Miss Sunshine, The Devil Wears Prada, United 93, Water, Pirates of the Caribbean:Dead Man’s Chest, Monster House, An Inconvenient Truth, Poseidon and Superman Returns.

On Sunday we plan to see The Queen and hopefully we can get to see Blood Diamond, Letters From Iwo Jima, Notes on a Scandal, Dreamgirls and The Pursuit of Happyness, or at least a few of them before the show starts. Some of the other nominated movies are no longer in the theatres, so we will have to wait until they appear on DVD.

I have seen only two of the movies nominated for the best picture, but I think that The Departed is a much better movie than Little Miss Sunshine. I would have liked to have seen Babel while it was still showing in the theatres, but if it wins, they will probably bring it back for a few weeks. After I have seen The Queen, I will be able to better judge which picture I think may win the best picture award.

Sometimes the best nomination doesn’t win the award. The voters in the academy may feel that a nominated person is due for an award this year, because they were so good last year, and didn’t win.

It seems rather early to write about this subject when the show won’t be on until next month, but I couldn’t think of anything else to write about today.

Have a good day,
Anne
