Brightening February
Monday February 04th 2008, 11:57 am

It is another sunny and seasonally mild day here on the east coast of Canada in Nova Scotia, and all the snow has melted. I would be naive to assume that we won’t be getting any more snow or cold weather this winter, as we are only at the half way mark, but we can only hope it won’t be too severe. Our groundhog, Shubenacadie Sam, didn’t see his shadow on Saturday, which could be a good sign. This is the third year in a row that he hasn’t seen it, and we had good weather during the remainder of those winters. We had an early start to our winter weather this year, but we have been lucky to have avoided some of the bad weather which hit other parts of the Maritimes and Canada since Christmas.

Yesterday we took our dogs for a walk on some of the Cole Harbour Salt Marsh trails. I think everyone who owns a dog in this area was there too. Penny, who doesn’t like other dogs, avoided them as best she could, but Archie wanted to play with every dog he saw. He doesn’t get out much, so it was a big adventure for him. They are such small dogs that running around our back yard is enough exercise for them. The lakes have finally frozen to a safe level, so every outdoor ice surface was filled with hockey players, babies in sleds, and children and their parents having fun skating. We are expecting some snow, rain and milder temperatures later this week, so next weekend may not as ideal for ice skating.

February is the month we do painting and redecorating at our house. These projects seem to brighten up February, which is usually a dreary month. Yesterday I bought some black melamine paint for my dining room furniture, which I plan on painting this week. The diningroom walls don’t need painting, because they were done a few years ago in a dill pickle green, which I still like. We will be painting the livingroom, a bedroom and the bathrooms this month because they haven’t been done for a few years. The tub surround and tiles will be replaced in the bathroom also this month, with new tiles and flooring.

We will be going to Benjamin Moore Paints later today to pick up some samples of paint colours for our decorating projects. I already checked the various online sites but the colours are hard to judge there. I probably won’t be chosing any of those neutral shades of beige, grey or taupe, which I find are too boring, so I am open to any other combination of colours to brighten up the rooms. I like shades of yellow, green and blue, so I am sure I will find something I like which will match the furniture and the lighting in those rooms. Half the fun of decorating is doing the research on the latest colour combinations available every year.

I am still going to Weight Watchers, and losing weight, so I have much more energy this year than I have had in the last couple of years. Having more energy certainly will make decorating much more enjoyable this year than in past Februarys. Losing weight makes everything appear brighter and more enjoyable. I highly recommend it.

Have a great day,
Anne
